Job Description:
Description: The RN - Perioperative Services assesses, plans,
directs, implements, and provides quality patient care for assigned
patients to include education directed towards individualized
patient needs utilizing the nursing process in coordination with
policies and procedures. The RN - Perioperative Services will also
be responsible for directing patient care for licensed and
ancillary staff.
Typical Duties:
* When providing direct patient care: plans, assesses, directs,
implements, and provides quality patient care for assigned patients
to include modifying nursing care, medication administration, and
discharge planning. Provides education directed towards
individualized patient needs utilizing the nursing process in
coordination with policies and procedures for the assigned
area.
* Monitors changes in patient condition to include recording and
reporting symptoms, assessing vital signs and intervening when
appropriate.
* Performs complete data collection from patient with regard to age
and developmental stage, presenting complaints, and pertinent
history.
* Supports the culture of quality with delivery of quality nursing
care utilizing evidence-based practice to decrease the potential
for infection, harm, or injury working with the interdisciplinary
team.
* Actively participates in the performance improvement processes
related to nursing practice.
* Communicates with patients and/or families using available
resources and tools. Provides age appropriate, patient language
preferred instructions, education and consents, to include
demonstrated fluency and timely completion of all documentation
requirements.
* Responsible to assist students in all disciplines to develop
skills and an understanding of collaborative values, attitudes, and
ideals in the care of patients and families.
* Conducts and coordinates patient care and patient transfers in
accordance with hospital policies and EMTALA regulations, as
applicable.
* Performs Phase II Recovery when assigned to: Endoscopy, Preop
Holding, Phase II Recovery, or Post Anesthesia Care Unit
(PACU).
* Performs the role of the circulating nurse when assigned to the
Operating Room.
* Performs the role of Pre-op, procedural, and Recovery nurse when
assigned to Endoscopy.
* Performs all levels of Recovery care if assigned to Phase I
Recovery (PACU), up to and including patients boarding in the PACU
due to a lack of hospital beds. May include all levels of care.
* Provides intensive care to ICU overflow patients when the
assignment is commiserate with the nurse's experience, competency
and education level.
* Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience:
* Perioperative Nurse:
* Associates or higher Degree in Nursing from an accredited school
of professional nursing.
* 1 plus years of telemetry experience as a practicing Registered
Nurse if assigned to POH, Endoscopy, Phase II Recovery or PACU.
* 2 years' experience in Perioperative nursing if assigned to
PAT.
OR
* OR Nurse:
* Associates or higher Degree in Nursing from an accredited school
of professional nursing.
* Acceptance to JPS Periop 101, or completion of a hospital based
operating room orientation/internship, or previous operating room
experience, or completion of JPS Nurse Residency Program.
* Must be able to work a 12 hour shift (as assigned); varied,
holiday; and/or weekend shifts as scheduled or required.
Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
* Current licensure by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State
of Texas or proof of reciprocity of licensure between the State of
Texas and another state. Maintained throughout employment.
* Current JPS recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and
must be maintained throughout employment.
* Completed American Heart Associations Advanced Cardiac Life
Support if assigned to the following areas: PACU, ENDO, POH, and
Phase II Recovery, or obtains within 90 days of employment or
transfer.
Required Specialized Training:
* Must successfully complete, pass, and maintain all applicable and
requisite training as established by each department in accordance
with the JPS Clinical Job Specific Competency Validation Checklist.
Completes the requisite certification and courses within the
required timeframes, to include but not limited to:
* Competency-based orientation program within 90 days of
employment.
* EKG course within 90 days of employment and maintained throughout
employment for Preop Holding, PACU, and Endoscopy.
* Completion of Moderation Sedation Competency within 90 days of
employment or Transfer if assigned to Endoscopy.
Preferred Education and Experience:
* Bachelors or higher Degree from an accredited Professional School
of Nursing.
* 1 plus years of telemetry experience as a practicing Registered
Nurse if assigned to POH, Endoscopy, Phase II Recovery or PACU or 1
plus years ICU experience if assigned to PACU.
Preferred Licensure/Certification:
* National Certification in the area of Nurse Specialty specific to
employment and relative to the patient care for Perioperative
Services. (CNOR, CPAN, CAPA, AACN, CGRN).
Preferred Specialized Training:
* 1 plus years of knowledge and experience using Electronic Medical
Record (EMR) systems.
