Residence Life Coordinator
Position Summary
The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) for First Year Communities is
a 12-month full-time, live-in position that is responsible for
supervising the ongoing operation of the first-year residential
student communities at Texas Wesleyan University. This is an
integral role in providing a safe and positive environment that
encourages opportunities for student growth and development. The
RLC is charged with building community within their residence halls
and encouraging the personal growth of both residential students
and student staff members through individual and group
relationships. The RLC provides ongoing supervision to a staff of
part-time Resident Assistants (RAs).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a high level of both in-hall and on-campus visibility
and availability.
- Cultivate a vibrant and healthy residence hall through ongoing
community development efforts including, but not limited to,
programming efforts, community outreach, and relationship
building.
- Serve as primary supervisor to a staff of 10-12 Resident
Assistants (RAs).
- Serve as the primary caretaker of the physical facilities of
residence hall communities.
- Support the academic mission of the university and Division of
Student Affairs.
- Manage the administrative functions of the community and keep
updated and accurate records.
- Assist with the move-in and closing day experiences each
semester.
- Coordinate a departmental collateral assignment to be
negotiated with the supervisor (RA Training, RA Selection).
- Partner with Orientation to ensure the first-year student
experience is seamless.
- Assist with summer operations(Camps and Conferences or Summer
Housing).
- Partner with Student Activities and campus partners for
large-scale programming.
- Adjudicate community policy violations.
- Assist with the development and coordination of signature
events for Texas Wesleyan University and the Division of Student
Affairs.
- Serve on Texas Wesleyan University and Division of Student
Affairs committees and task forces.
- Serve in the Residence Life on-call rotation.
- Due to the constant changes to the working environment in this
position, additional duties may be added or retracted from the
current job description at the time the need arises. The employee
will be informed of changes.
Education, Certifications and/or Licenses
- Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, College
Student Services, or related field preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred.
Experience
- 1 - 3 years of experience in Residence Life and/or Student
affairs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills.
- Knowledge of basic residence hall operations.
- Knowledge of student development theory.
- Effective team member participation and leadership.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques with the ability to
react calmly and effectively in emergencies.
- Familiarity with FERPA and the Fair Housing Act.
- Ability to speak Spanish preferred.
- Ability to work independently in the most efficient manner with
minimum supervision.
- Proficiency with housing software program (StarRez
preferred).
- Proficiency with conduct management software programs (Maxient
preferred).
- Ability to resolve conflicts while being fair and consistent
with students, especially in discipline matters.
- Ability to adhere to University and departmental policies and
procedures.
- Ability to be discrete in handling confidential matters, while
complying with privacy (FERPA/HIPAA) regulations.
- Ability to demonstrate a cooperative attitude while working
with a diverse student population.
- Possession of good leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to discern student needs and respond in a caring
manner.
- Ability to maintain composure in challenging situations or
emergencies and handle situations as a professional.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and good judgment under
pressure.
- Proficiency with an integrated administrative system and
current computer software programs.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance and positive
attitude.
- Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and
judgments.
- Ability to be discrete in handling confidential matters, while
complying with FERPA regulations.
- Excellent verbal, spoken, and presentation skills.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and
small group situations to current and prospective students and
University employees.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units
of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and
decimals.
- Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
