Planning and Development

The Development Division of the Planning & Development Department is seeking a Assistant Building Official to perform duties associated with managing certain activities and operations, including plans examination and building inspection code enforcement.

The selected candidate will manage, supervise and coordinate the activities and operations of plans examination and building inspection code enforcement within the Planning & Development Department. They will assist business owners, citizens, developers and contractors in finding solutions to code related challenges. The candidate will coordinate with other divisions, departments and outside agencies to review and approve construction projects.

Successful candidate will have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of management; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and have an analytical approach to decision-making.

Duties will include, but not limited to:

* Ordinance interpretations; including building, trades, signs, and parkway

* Technical and administrative guidance regarding adopted City building codes

* Developing and directing training for staff, including supervisors

* Collaborate with IT staff to develop and coordinate technical requirements and business processes

* Writing policies and Standard Operating Procedures

* Data analysis

* Facilitating intra-departmental meetings

* Liaison for Planning and Development Department and external agencies on code-making committees

* Make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences

* Help train users on technologies acquired or developed

* Write project status and activity reports

* Use MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

* Manage Plans Exam and Building Inspection budget

* Supervising plans examination and building inspection supervisory staff

Minimum job requirements:

* Bachelor s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Science, Industrial Technology or a related field.

* Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in construction, building code enforcement or engineering, including two years of administrative and supervisory responsibility.

* Master Code Professional certification or ICC Certified Building Official certification required at the time of hire.

Preferred candidates will have experience in the following:

* A technical background that enhances their project management, business analysis, requirements gathering, documentation, and facilitation skills

* Municipal or local government experience

* A mastery of MS Office suite of products (including MS Project)

* The ability to research, analyze and evaluate new construction methods and techniques

* Experience with permitting software and electronic plan review
